The Garden

On pages 67–69, Christopher goes into the garden and contemplates the importance of description in the book he is writing. His teacher Siobhan told him "the idea of a book was to describe things using words so that people could read them and make a picture in their own head" [p. 67]. What is the effect of reading Christopher's extended description, which begins, "I decided to do a description of the garden" and ends "Then I went inside and fed Toby"? How does this passage relate to a quote Christopher likes from The Hound of the Baskervilles: "The world is full of obvious things which nobody by chance ever observes" [p. 73]?

  1. The effect of Christopher's extended desciption is that it shows the reader that his senses are keen and that every little detail matters to him so that he can observe things in ways that "normal" people can not. And this passage relates to the quote from The Hound of the Baskervilles because in the quote it says the world is full of obvious things that nobody pays attetion to, but with Christopher, he can notice these things very dramatically.

  2. This means that Christopher is semi-aware that he realizes very complex things, but not fully.

  3. Christopher is noticing the obvious things that nobody pays attention to, and noticing them and focusing on them in very great detail. He starts by describing the garden and then goes on to the sky because he is more interested in it. He then goes on to talk about Alien spaceships. The effect of this reading is to show the reader the extreme detail Christopher's mind can break things down in.

  4. Christopher, because of his autism, can detect and remember the minutest details of any situation and transitions at his pace to other topics whenever he wants or whenever he gets bored with the previous topic, he just moves on.

  5. The effect of the description is that you get a much better understanding of how focused and finely tuned his senses are. Christopher is extremely observant, much more so than an average person. It relates to the quote because it shows how we just take all of those small details for granted and we just see the big picture whereas he sees every particular characteristic and feature.

  6. You get a better understanding of his mind and what he thinks about and how he observes the world from a very intelluectual approach. It relates to how he says that he notices obvious things that most people don't notice, like the clouds.

  7. This quote shows that Christopher can see the obvious, but also the little details which, to him, are the obvious statements. Most people, for example, would notice that the grass is green, but Christopher notices what shade of green, where the patches of dirt are, about how long each blade is, and even the insects that are living in it.These are things that we would never think about noticing, but it comes naturally to Christopher. This relates to the quote from The Hound of Bakersvilles because it too says that things stick out to certian people that most people just overlook.

  8. This section implies that Christopher can see lots of little details, as well as the obvious things, and that he is capable of seeing the world around him differently from other people. This relates to the quote from "The Hound of the Baskervilles" because it also says that people may see things that others may not.

  9. Christopher pays great attention to even the smallest of details, but is not fully aware that the average person does not. The quote relates because whereas most people look at the big picture, Chris sees the small details.

  10. Christopher's description provides you with a vivid image of the scenery and setting. This proves he pays attention to detail and is able to describe something in a way that helps the reader visualize what they're reading. Most people don't bother to take in the details, unlike Christopher who has a great memory for detail due to his autism.

  11. In quote, "The world is full of obvious things which nobody by chance ever observes." Represents most of us in the sense that we tend to overlook the small details. But Christopher shows that details we would over look can be very interesting, like the strange shape and color of the clouds.

  12. His description provides a detailed look at the setting that he is in, which is the garden at the moment. This passage shows that even though he is autistic, he still has very well-rounded senses. It gives you a very clear image of what he is seeing. This relates to his favorite quote because he only seems to notice the most obvious things, such as the sky, that everyone knows is there, but they never seem to go into detail over it or seem amazed by it. Chris, on the other hand, finds it interesting and goes into great detail describing it. It sticks out in his mind to him, while others just will look over it as if it is nothing.

  13. The effect of reading Christopher's extended description gives an example of how Christopher's detailed thinking works. He notices every small detail that most people might not notice. This passage relates to the quote Christopher likes from The Hound of the Baskervilles: "The world is full of obvious things which nobody by chance ever observes" because Christopher himself would agree with this quote since he sees all the details and "obvious things" that most overlook.

  14. I like all of the discribing because now I have a mental image of what his garen looks like. Thank you Ms. Siobhan! The effect is that it really shows you how many details Christopher notices. And how many of them I would never have noticed at all and he sees it so clearly and in so much detail. It relates to the quote because there are so many things that most people don't notice. But people like Christopher see completely and plainly like it's an everyday thing.

  15. Christopher can remember every tiby detail of the things around him, and his description of the garden shows that he pays attention to everything as though it could impact his entire investigation.

  16. This passage relates to the quote because Christopher is just writing about very normal, everyday things. The difference is, he is examining them much closer than the average person would. He adds much more detail while describing them because of that.

  17. This shows how Christopher notices the most obvious things which people over look, just like the quote from the hound of the baskervilles. He is able to notice and remember what the clouds looked like well enough to draw one in particular and hear him breathing with all the noise in the background.

  18. The result of this is that Christopher is able to see things, that could be obvious, that others dont see. It relates to the quote because most people overlook the most obvious things, but not Christopher.

  19. When he describes the garden, he points out some of the smallest details, but misses some of the largest descriptions most people would point out. This relates to the quote because he is observing the less obvious things.

  20. Chrisopher notices the little and basic things others do not realize. He first starts by describing the ground but then gets stuck on the sky and explains these two things in great detail. Just like from the quote in the book he notices the things people tend to over look.

    ReplyDelete
  21. The description shows exactly how many little details Christopher is always looking at. He never seems to miss anything, and in the description is goes into detail about a garden that "wasn't very interesting or different".

  22. the people take life for granted and that they don't take the time to slow down and take in the scenery and to appreciate all the things that WON'T be here forever like family, friends, pets, and gardens.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Christopher takes into account every little detail. He probably enjoys telling about all these details because he wrote them in the book.

  24. The effect Christopher had while he was describing it was that he observed and took special note of all the key things that really tie in the characteristics of a special place through the sights and the sounds and the air that others without the ability he has would normally miss. This relates to the baskerville quote because there really are those some-what obvious things that create the landscape that other people tend to miss.

  25. Christopher is noticing not just the garden but everything in and around it also in great detail.
He wasn't describing objects and characters in his book like this. It relates to the quote because when you look at things you don't notice the true detail that is really there.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Christopher doesn't only recognize the garden but he recognizes everything the garden consists of. This is related to the quote because you never fully recognize what is truly in that area.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Christopher goes into great detail, he really does notice the little things and enjoys them. He wants to take it in, and look at things most people over look.

    ReplyDelete
  28. His description shows that he is able to notice the small details most people ignore. This relates to the quote because Christopher sees the obvious things the world is full of which most people don't see.

  29. After reading the description, you realize that Christopher pays attention to everything with great detail. He then connects it to something else (talking about the sky which leads to talking about aliens in the sky). This relates to the quote in The Hound of the Baskervilles because he sees the obvious things that no one pays attention to, and he sees them with keen senses.

    ReplyDelete
  30. His favorite quote states that there are many very obbious things in life that most people do not pay attention to, and his description of the garden shows that he is one of the few people who sees the great detail of everything on first glance.

    ReplyDelete
  31. christopher likes that quote because he feels like the quote is right, he sees little details, which can be important but others miss.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Christopher writes down all of the little details because he thinks that they will all help. he doesn't get that saying he fed toby is not important to the case at all. and he likes the quote because it is the same as his way of thinking, every detail counts.

    ReplyDelete
  33. When Christopher describes the garden he lists the obvious things for him to find, but to the "normal" people of this world we all are oblivious to these things by looking at the garden at a quick glance. This definitely relates to the quote because the obvious things to him in life, no one ever notices.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Christopher views things not as a large whole. but many small details. so when he observed things like a garden he doesn't just see a Garden he sees the small little things in the Garden that most people would never see.

    ReplyDelete
  35. perhaps Christopher does not know that other people see the world in so so many different way. perhaps he believes that everyone sees the world in all the incredible detail that he sees it in, so to him, he is just displaying the world as it is.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Christopher notices the smallest details in things, such as the things he lists in the garden, that other people are not capable of noticing by quickly glancing. He likes the quote because he feels it relates to him; noticing small details.

    ReplyDelete
  37. The effect of his extended description lets the reader know that he is very bright and he has very keen senses. It relates to the quote because he notices the small details that many people don't.

  38. What Christopher's extended description tells us is that he can observe small details that are normaly not percieved by others. The quote relates to the one cound in The Hound of the Baskervilles because in the quote it says the world is full of obvious things that nobody pays attetion to, but Christopher can notice those things that normal people never really pick up on.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Christopher gives a detailed description about the things he sees, which is basically all the small things that nobody would ever notice. It's like the Hound of the Baskervilles quote because he doesn't happen to 'notice' the things he describes, but he sees them all the time by paying attention to the world around him.

    ReplyDelete
  40. The description Christopher gives is very specific. He takes in every detail about the garden and puts it into writing. Most things people without Christopher's condition wouldn't ever take into consideration the things he sees. THis relates to The Hounds of Baskervilles quote because he magnifies details that normal people wouldn't and he thinks they're important.

    ReplyDelete
  41. The effect of Christopher's description shows how he thinks and the things he notices on a daily basis that we usually don't. He's extremely observant as you can tell in his description. This relates to the quote from the Hound of the Baskervilles because Christopher notices some pretty basic and obvious things that people tend not to pay any attention to.

    ReplyDelete
  42. In Christopher's extended description, it shows the reader that Christopher pays attention to every little detail and can explain in a way to let the reader picture what he is saying. This relates to the quote from his favorite book because any other person would not have gone into such a detailed description of the garden or would have mentioned or noticed most details.

    ReplyDelete
  43. The affect the reader notices is that Christopher is again a very high functioning person (in some respects) and that, due to his autism, his mind is very different from the average human being. He is able to observe many highly specified details in a matter of seconds that many of us tend to ignore due to their insagnificance (spelled it wrong). He also has a very detailed imagination that can run away from the original train of thought. This also correltates with the quote for he, like stated before, is very talented at finding insagnificant (spelling error again) details about his surroundings that the average human being does not pick up on or does not take the time to notice such unimportant minute details.

  44. Christopher describes very intricate details of things that most people wouldn't notice or even care about. He makes connections that other people might call irrelevant or silly, but, in Christopher's mind, totally unrlated concepts can fit together like puzzle pieces. The effect of Christopher ending the chapter with "Then I went inside and fed Toby.", is dramatic and helps readers understand how Christopher's mind works a little better. This abrupt transition also magnifies his eye for detail, as well as his strong attention to detail and the "little things", that, as stated in the Hound of Baskervilles is a rarity.

  45. The way that Christopher sees things is different from everyone else in that he sees the things that no one bothers to look at, and pays the utmost attention to detail to them. It seems that he thinks faster than other people and connects things that otherwise would seem random, such as how he ends with, "Then i went inside and fed Toby.", which had nothing to do with anything he had just been talking about.

  46. Christopher sees things that he thinks should be obvious, but they are things most people may not notice. The things he described include the smallest details, but these things are important to him. These are the things he notices all the time, and uses to make connections in his mind. When he says, "Then I went inside and fed Toby," it shows how quickly he changes from one thing to the next.

  47. The effect of Christopher's extended description is that it shows he notices the tiny ordinary things that other people wouldn't notice. An example is when he is observing the clouds in the garden. This relates to the quote in the book because it shows how he is the one to observe the small things that don't matter to most people.

  48. Christopher's description shows that he takes into account very small details of many things. His autism has caused him to be hyper-observant, and makes him notice things that might not be able to be seen by the normal eye. This makes him very keen to smaller details, which in turn makes him a good detective. This also relates to the quote because it basically is describing his abilities with observance in a nutshell. No one may notice, for example, the pure and true beauty of a garden except for one taking the time to look at everything. This includes everything individually, and as a collective whole. I also like the quote a lot, but that's another note...

  49. This passage really illustrates how observant Christopher can be. His vivid descriptions of the clouds fit the Hound of the Baskervilles quote perfectly; he notices all these intricate details in the sky, which no one else ever really bothers to look at in depth. The extended description also shows his tendency to go off on tangents. He plans to describe the garden but ends up describing the clouds instead.
