Logic

Christopher experiences the world quantitatively and logically. His teacher Mr. Jeavons tells him that he likes math because it's safe. But Christopher's explanation of the Monty Hall problem gives the reader more insight into why he likes math. Does Mr. Jeavons underestimate the complexity of Christopher's mind and his responses to intellectual stimulation? Does Siobhan understand Christopher better than Mr. Jeavons?

  1. Yes, mr jeavons under estimates Christopher. He is most likely unaware of all the complex things that he can do in his mind. I think that Siobhan does have a better understanding.

  2. Mr. Jeavons does underestimate the complexity of Christopher's mind because he believes that Chris can not comprehend as much as others and that he uses these prime numbers to be safe, but Chris' mind is much more capable then believed to be. Siobhan does understand Chris better because Mr. Jeavons does not know how much Chris can actually put forth.

  3. Mr. Jeavons does underestimate Christopher's mind and the ability and complexity of it. Jeavons thinks that he likes math because it is "safe" and there is always an answer in concrete. While this is true, in my opinion I think he likes it for this reason because he doesn't have to explain things to other people because he isn't the best at communicating. Siobhan does understand Christopher better because she knows him and has been around him much much more. She has got him to open up with her.

  4. Mr. Jeavons underestimates Christopher's mental capacity. This is probably because he thinks that his disability affects his intelligence instead of just his social abilities. Also, it could be that Mr. Jeavons thinks that Christopher can only understand things with set rules, but Christopher proves that wrong with the Monty Hall problem. I think that Siobhan understands him much better than Mr. Jeavons does because she can connect to him and she knows how to speak to him without making him feel confused, belittled, or hurt.

  5. Mr. Jeavons underestimates Christopher's abality to comprehend things in his intelluectual abality, like certain math problems because he doesnt always seem smart on the reality. Siobhan knows that Christopher is smart and she helps him get to where he needs to go and explains things, she is kind of like a bridge connecting one thing ot another for Christopher and explaining them.

  6. Mr. Jeavons underestimates Christopher's comprehension. I believe Christopher enjoys and excels at math because it is pure reason and logic, lacking any emotion or human element. Siobhan has a better understanding of Christopher's mind and therefore can better communicate with him.

  7. Mr. Jeavons does not notice the complexity of Chris' mind. He thinks Chris is very good at math, and that is all. When in reality he is very smart and well rounded. I also think Mr. Jeavons has a strict image and strict thoughts of how and autistic person's mind works. Siobhan obviously has come to understand how brilliant Chris is and because of that can connect puzzle pieces with puzzle pieces to get a point across to Chris.

  8. Mr. Jeavons obviously underestimates Christopher. Mr. Jeavons believes that, because of his autism, Christopher doesn't really understand numbers he just uses them to comfort himself. When in actuality, Christopher likes the complexity and the intelectual stimulation that math provides him. Siobhan clearly understands the way Christopher's mind works better. She understands that math is more than just a comfort, it's a way of life for Christopher as well as something that he can use to calm himself down.Siobhan knows that Christopher doesn't just understand numbers, he lives it and sees it where ever he goes.

  9. Yes, I do believe that Mr. Jeavons has underestimated Christopher. And when Mr. Jeavons claims the reason Chris likes math so much is because it is 'safe'. I agree with that statement, but at the same time I think it is somewhat broad and doesn't describe why exactly he finds it safe. Math doesn't require being social and talking to other people, which is perfect for Christopher because he happens to find that extremely difficult. And I also think that Siobhan does understand Christopher better than Mr. Jeavons because Siobhan seems to connect with him on a much deeper level and seems to truly understand Chritopher's limitations and how to work with them.

  10. Mr. Jeavons does seem to underestimate to complexity of Christopher's mind. He may believe that Christopher likes math beacuase he has trouble comprehending really broad spectrums. Siobhan does seem to understand Christopher better that Mr. Jeavons, She seems to be Christophers Doctor Carlock to an extent.

  11. Mr. Jeavons obviously underestimates Christopher's complexity because he does not realize how much Chris can really show. He tells Chris that math is safe and thats why he likes it so much, but really what i believe he is trying to insinuate is that he doesn't believe Chris has the mental level to do anything but math because of his disability. He also does not understand how high of a level of math Chris really has. Yes, Siobhan does understand Chris better because she has spent more alone time with him and understands how his mind operates much better than Mr. Jeavons does due to her personal connection to him.

  12. Mr. Jeavons has no clue what is going through Christopher's mind and what he thinks of math. Siobhan slightly understands Chritopher's mind more than Mr. Jeavons because she has been working with Christopher for longer than Mr. Jeavons, but nobody but Christopher and the readers have any slight idea about what is going through Christopher's mind at any time

  13. Mr. Jeavons does indeed underestimate the complexity of Christopher's mind. He sees Christopher as a boy who isnt as capable as the average child when in fact he rises above. Mr. Jeavons thinks Christopher plays it safe by using prime numbers but this is false as well. Siobhan does have a better understanding of Chris, because Mr. Jeavons compared to Siobhan is not as aware of how capable Chris really is.

  14. Siobhan does definatly understand Christopher better that Mr. Jeavons. And Mr. Jeavons underestimates Christopher more than I would have thought possible. I think Mr. Jeavons is one of those people who don't fully understand people who have autism and he never will be able to understand them. It's not really his fault than, that he underestimates Christopher, he just doesn't understand the mind of people who have autism and view them as if they aren't smart at all; when in actuallity, they are amazingly smart.

  15. Mr. Jeavons does not see Christopher as a boy who is capable of understanding the same things as other children, in this, he underestimates Christopher's ability to see things as they are, such as math being straightforward and "safe".

    ReplyDelete
  16. Mr. Jeavons underestimates Christopher and doesn't see things the way he does. Mr. Jeavons says that there is always a straightforward answer at the end, although Christopher basically thinks that there are two sides to everything. He says that Mr. Jeavons doesn't understand numbers like he does, therefore Christopher is underestimated. Siobhan seems to understand him more because she is more open to how he sees the world around him.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Mr. Jeavon's believes that Christopher likes things that are safe, that are challenging but have a clear definite solution. Christopher likes math because he can figure things out and come up with his own answer. This is also why he like mysteries. Siobhan understands this better and knows Christopher better than Mr. Jeavon in this way.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Mr. Jeavons underestimates how complex Christopher's mind is. They don't see things the same way (in this case, math)He doesn't agree with some of the ways Christopher views some of the math as well as other things. Siobhan understands him much better because she is more open to the way he sees things.

  19. yes he underestimates him; chris is smarter than mr. Jeavons but mr. Jeavons doesnt want to own up to it because he's insecure and isn't a "real man". Mr. Jeavons thinks that Chris is dumber "than the average" bear. Siobhan definitely understands chris better because they're both teenagers. Teenagers are MEANT to understand each other; especially better than adults.

  20. Mr. Jeavons does underestimate the complexity of Chris's mind. He believes this because Chris isn't very smart in the reality. He doesn't agree with some of the things that Chris may believe. Siobhan does understand him more because she knows him more and also is very open-minded.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Mr.Jeavons does underestimate Christopher. Not because he doesnt think he is smart, but because it is hard to understand how an someone with autism might think. He has a different thought process then everyone else, but is smarter too.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I believe that Mr. Jeavons does not understand Christopher completely, while Siobhan understands Christopher better than anyone. Mr. Jeavons doesn't believe that Christopher that Christopher is as complex as he seems because he says everything in such a straight forward manor. Siobhan on the other hand has worked with people like Christopher so understands his unique mind.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Mr. Jeavons doesn't seem to understand exactly how Christopher's mind works. He appears the think that just because Christopher says things that might not sound "normal" that he doesn't think as well as anyone else. Siobhan definitely knows what's going on in Christopher's mind better than anyone else he communicates with.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Mr.Jeavons understands Christopher completely, he knows that he's autistic and he knows how to challenge christopher in a comfortable way. but siobhan may not be able to challenge him and i believe she tries to possibly even conform him.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Mr. Jeavons sees Christopher as just your average smart kid. Siobhan knows how his brain really works and the way he thinks so literally. Mr. Jeavons doesn't realize how Christopher's mind is so complex.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Mr. Jeavons may have not understood Christopher's mental capacity and seemed to have slightly underestimated him because he does not think Chris is as smart and intellectual as he really is because it seems like Mr. Jeavons does not fully understand autism and autistic people when he talks to Chris. Siobhan would definitely understand Christopher better than Mr. Jeavons because they have known each other longer, are better acquaintances, and are more open.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Mr. Jeavons doesn't fully recognize how advance christophers mind is. Christophers mind is so complex that very few recognize his unique trait. Mr. Jeans doesn't take the time to figure out how his mind works.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Mr. Jeavons does underestimate the complexity of Christopher's mind. Christopher explains that math is not always safe, like the Monty Hall Problem, life can have different outcomes each time. Siobhan knows Christopher better because she would have expected him to say something like this.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Mr. Jeavons definitely underestimates the complexity of Christopher's mind. What Christopher does and likes doesn't all have to be in order to make him feel safe. Siobhan understands a lot better than Mr. Jeavons.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I do think Siobhan understands Christopher better than Mr. Jeavons does, because Mr. Jeavons sees Christopher more as a very insecure adolescent than as an extremely intellegent human who just has trouble communicating. He likes maths because it is challenging and complex.

    ReplyDelete
  31. christopher is underestimated by Mr. Jeavons, because he thinks christopher can just do simple math, while he can think, understand, and solve increadibly complex problems. Siobhan does understand him more because she knows that he is much smarter then most people give him credit for.

    ReplyDelete
  32. mr. Jeavons definitely underestimates Christopher's ability. he can do the most complicated math through simple ways and it is his gift. siobhan does understand him better cause he gets autism better.

    ReplyDelete
  33. When you have someone who is autistic you can easilty underestimate the intellectual capability they have. Mr. Jeavons thinks that Christopher is scared about other subjects so he does math the most. Siobhan understands Christopher better than anyone else in this book.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Mr. Jeavons only sees Christopher for his disability and not his true intellect. However Siobhan can see past Christopher's disability and into his true intellectual greatness.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Mr.Jeavons' view of Christopher's intellect is influenced by the outward appearance of Christopher. Mr.Jeavons cannot know what is actually going on in Christopher's mind, all he can see the disability. Siobhan understands Christopher better than Mr.Jeavons, she has a great understanding and patience for him whereas other people like Mr.Jeavons may not.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yes, Mr. Jeavons underestimates Christopher's intellectual ability. Christopher is very intelligent, while Mr. Jeavons thinks of Christopher as insecure. Siobhan understands Christopher better than Jeavons because Siobhan believes Christopher has a lot of potential, and does recognize Christopher's intellectual ability.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Mr Jeavons does underestimate the complexity of Christopher's mind, basically because he's unaware of the complex thinking that Christopher can do. Siobahn understands Christopher better because he knows christopher better, and believes that he has more potential.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I believe that Mr. Jeavons does not understand Christopher as much as Siobahn does, because Mr. Jeavons sees Christopher more as an insecure child than as the extremely smart problem solver that Chris really is. He likes maths because it provides a complex chalenge. Siobahn understands chris and believes in his abilities.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Mr. Jeavons definitely underestimates Christopher. He thinks Christopher is more simple and needs something safe to do, and treats him like a scared little boy. Siobahn, on the other hand, understands that Christoper is a complex being and likes things that are similar to math.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Siobahn most definitely understands Christopher better than Mr. Jeavons. She looks at Christopher as a normal child with some behavioral issues. She understands and comprehends his level of intellectuality and challenges it. Mr. Jeavons hasn't worked with Christopher nearly as much as Siobahn has so he doesn't completely understand how Christopher's mind works and does undersestimate him.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I think Mr. Jeavons does underestimate Christopher because of his autism, and he might not think he's capable of all the things that he's accomplished. Siobhan, on the other hand, looks at Christopher more closely and personally, so she can realize his potential and definitely knows what he's capable of.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I believe that Mr. Jeavons does under estimate the complexity of Christopher's brain. He can figure things out in a more logical way and then can give you a whole explanation on how he got that answer and why it makes sense, as seen in the Monty Hall problem. Shiobhan understands how Christopher thinks and can understand where he is coming from when he says certain things.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Mr. Jeavons underestimates the fact that even though the high functioning autistic individual may be disabilitated in certain areas, they are more that capable in other areas, as is the case with Christopher. He sees math as comforting, yes, but also sees as a passion,a calling, and a way of life. It guides him to be creative and at times keeps him from panicing. Shiobhan understands this more than anyone, for she spends the most time with him it seems and that she therefore understands his neurological situation.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think that Mr. Jeavons greatly understimates the complexity of Christopher's mind. Mr. Jeavons makes it seem as if Christopher is really 1-dimensional. As if he can only see one answer and one concept at a time. However, based on Christopher's in-depth explanation of the Monty Hall problem, I think the Christopher can see things in a very intelligent way. "Mr. Jeavons was wrong and numbers are sometimes very complicated and not very straighforward at all. And that is why I like The Monty Hall Problem." -Christopher

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yes, I do think that Mr. Jeavons has problems understanding the complexity of Christopher's mind and how it works differently from all of his other students. Siobhan understands him easily because she is more willing to listen and help Christoper with his problems.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Mr. Jeavons underestimates Christopher's mind. Mr. Jeavons doesn't realize how many thoughts and calculations Christopher can have going on at the same time. Siobhan does understand Christopher better, because she knows how Christopher's ways of thinking work. We can see this in the way Christopher writes about the things Siobhan says to help him.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I think Mr. Jeavons underestimates the complexity of Christopher's mind. Siobhan understands Christopher better because she helps him understand certain things, such as how other people look when they have a certain feeling. She also talks to Christopher more and that can be a factor as to why Mr. Jeavons underestimates him.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Mr. Jeavons underestimates Christopher's mind. He doesn't realize that Christopher is actually very gifted, and isn't just sticking with math to be safe. He can process many things at one time, but Mr. Jeavons does not realize this. Siobhan understands him much better, for she has prior experience with his mind. She also knows him better, and therefore understands him more.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Mr. Jeavons sees Christopher only as a retarded child, so of course he's going to say something insulting about Christopher's intelligence. But Siobhan understands autistic kids, and can see that Christopher is very smart. She doesn't underestimate him because of his lack of social skills.
